The Colors of the Russian Toy: From Classic Black & Tan to Rare Lilac
One of the joys of living with Russian Toys is their palette. The same elegant little dog can wear glossy black with copper accents, warm chocolate, smoky blue or an almost silvery lilac. In this guide we walk through the breed's colors — and show them on our own dogs.
Black & Tan: The Classic
Black and tan is the signature look of the breed — a deep black coat with warm, clearly outlined tan markings above the eyes, on the muzzle, chest and legs. This is the color most people picture when they think "Russian Toy", and it is the color of our Mickey, Mini and Freddie. A well-bred black and tan looks like a tiny, polished bronze statuette come to life.
Brown & Tan: Warm Chocolate
Replace the black with rich chocolate and you get the brown and tan — one of the warmest, most photogenic colors in the breed. The nose and eye rims turn brown to match, and the eyes often glow amber against the coat. Our Jasmin, Kiki and Charlie all carry this beautiful color, and their puppies — like our graduates Theo and little Pixie — regularly inherit it.
Blue, Lilac and Red: The Rare End of the Palette
Blue and tan is a dilute of black: the coat takes on a smoky, gunmetal shade that looks almost velvet in the sun. Lilac and tan is rarer still — a double dilution that softens chocolate into a pale, silvery-taupe tone. Because two copies of the dilution gene are needed from both parents, lilac puppies appear only in carefully planned litters, which makes them some of the most sought-after Russian Toys in the world. Our lilac girl Luna from the latest litter is exactly such a treasure.
And then there are the reds — from bright ginger to deep red-sable, with or without an overlay of darker hair. A red Russian Toy with its huge ears looks remarkably like a tiny fawn, and this color has admirers who will wait years for the right puppy.
One thing matters more than any color: health and type. A rare color on a poorly bred dog is just a rare color. We plan every pairing for structure, temperament and health first — the beautiful coat is the bonus on top.
