7 Dogs That Look Like Chihuahuas (But Aren't)

"Is that a Chihuahua?" If you own any tiny, big-eared dog, you hear this question weekly. The Chihuahua is so famous that in most people's minds it stands for every small dog with radar ears. In reality, several distinct breeds share the silhouette — different histories, different temperaments, and in some cases arguably better fits for family life. Here are seven breeds most often mistaken for Chihuahuas.

1. The Russian Toy — the One Even Vets Misread

The closest look-alike and the rarest of them all. The Russian Toy descends from the salon dogs of the Russian aristocracy, weighs the same 4–6 pounds, and was only recognized by the AKC in 2022 — so rare in America that clinics routinely register them as Chihuahuas. The tells: dramatically larger, thinner, higher-set ears; almond eyes instead of round protruding ones; longer legs on an elegant square frame; and in the long-haired variety, spectacular ear fringes no Chihuahua carries. Temperament-wise it is livelier than it looks yet famously gentle and people-oriented — a true velcro companion. (We may be biased: this is the breed we dedicate our lives to.)

2–7. The Rest of the Look-Alike Lineup

Miniature Pinscher (8–10 lbs): often called a "big Chihuahua", actually an old German breed. The tell: the famous hackney gait — high-stepping like a carriage horse — and a docked tail tradition.

Toy Fox Terrier (4–7 lbs): an American terrier through and through. The tell: predominantly white coat with head markings, and a busier, more driven terrier energy.

Prague Ratter (Pražský Krysařík, 3–6 lbs): the Czech cousin and one of the smallest breeds on earth. The tell: even finer bone than a Chihuahua and a smooth, sleek head without the domed skull.

English Toy Terrier (6–8 lbs): the elegant British ancestor of many toy breeds, always black and tan. The tell: candle-flame ears — a shape unique to the breed.

Papillon (5–10 lbs): shares the huge ears, but they are heavily fringed like butterfly wings (hence the name). The tell: the coat and the classic spaniel face.

Chiweenie (a Chihuahua × Dachshund mix): looks like a long Chihuahua. The tell: the body proportions — short legs, extended back — give the Dachshund half away instantly.

Bottom line: if you love the look but want something rarer than the dog every neighbor has — or a temperament famously easier to live with — meet the Russian Toy first. We are always happy to introduce you to ours.
